SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 53 acknowledges and congratulates communities that recognize the courage and sacrifice of the Bataan veterans and their importance to the state and specifically identifies the Taos intergenerational celebration honoring these veterans.

Significant Issues

The 200th Coast Artillery was once based in Taos and was one of the most decorated units in World War II.  There are approximately 60 remaining survivors from the Bataan Death March, and Taos is planning a celebration of the heroes of the unit and their families on May 8-9, 2004.  VSC will play a key role in this celebration.
