SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 544 revises current statute to authorize an additional fifteen percent tuition charge for those students currently qualifying for in-state tuition under the provisions of the Texas 135-mile tuition waiver program.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

Based on the number of participants in the Texas 135-mile tuition waiver program in academic year 2002-2003, CHE estimates the bill would generate about $520 thousand in additional revenue for FY05.  Credit would be taken for this additional tuition revenue through the higher education funding formula, thus, reducing the state general fund appropriation to New Mexico State University, Eastern New Mexico University and Western New Mexico University by $520 thousand.
