SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 375 appropriates $50.0 to PED to study how New Mexico public schools can best provide improved nutrition and education for optimum nutrition and physical activity.

Significant Issues

The bill requires PED to appoint a committee to study and make recommendations on current nutritional value to students in public schools, develop curriculum programs for teaching and promoting healthy physical activity, assess the fiscal impact on public schools if food and beverage sales are reduced and identify possible alternative sources of revenues.

The DOH and PED are currently in the planning stages for conducting a forum on physical activity and nutrition issues in the schools. DOH indicates it has received a planning grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the purpose of developing a state plan around obesity issues.
