SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 216 appropriates $330.0 to provide a cost-of –living adjustment, start independent living programs in unserved counties, and support rural independent living services.

Significant Issues

The bill if enacted would provide independent living services to New Mexicans with disabilities and the opportunity to increase their independence. The funding would enable the agency to provide these services to unserved counties and rural areas.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

Senate Bill 216 appropriates $330.0 from the general fund and is recurring.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

DVR indicates that they have the experience, administrative procedures and an established program to develop and implement the intent of the legislation.

OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES

The consequences of not enacting this bill would be that people with disabilities living in unserved counties in New Mexico will continue to be without services resulting in increased dependence on strained resources, both personal and public.
