SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
The Senate Bill 147
appropriates $200.0 to PED for a teacher cadet program.
Significant Issues
The PED and school district representatives will
work with the Commission on Higher Education, teacher preparation programs and community
colleges to develop concurrent enrollment courses that address current issues
in education as well as innovative teaching practices.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Senate Bill 147 appropriates $200.0 from the
general fund and is recurring.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
PED will work with
school district representatives, Commission of Higher Education and others to implement the program.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
According to PED, the
Las Cruses Public Schools and New Mexico State University (NMSU) have a
concurrent enrollment program currently in place for future teachers.
Implementation of this program was funded from a Teacher Quality Enhancement
Grant.
