SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 27 amends Section 22-13-14 NMSA
1978, pertaining to emergency drills in the Public School Code to require,
without increasing the total number of drills, that public and private schools
conduct two shelter-in –place drills and one evacuation drill during the school
year.
Significant Issues
According to PED, shelter in place and
evacuation are part of the Safe School Plan that each public school must adopt
and file with PED, but currently there is no requirement that schools practice
such drills.
PED indicates that the Fire Marshall also
supports replacing three of the fire drills with the other emergency drills
prescribed in the bill and requesting a member of a local fire department, paid
or volunteer, to be on hand during the emergency drills.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Senate Bill 27 does
not contain an appropriation.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
The PED will monitor
the mandates of the bill along with school districts.
