SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Joint Memorial 9 requests that:

  • the Legislature urge the President and Congress of the United States to increase the level of funding for states to assist in the full implementation of the federal requirements under the No Child Left Behind (NLCB) Act of 2001,
  • the New Mexico delegation be requested to work to secure adequate funding for mandates required under federal law, and
  • copies of this mandate be forwarded to the President, he Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, each member of Congress elected from New Mexico and the Secretary of Public Education for distribution as appropriate.

     Significant Issues

The PED reports that it currently receives federal funds under Title II-Teacher Quality, grants for state assessments and elementary and secondary education to support NCLB requirements but the requirements exceed current funding.
