SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 508 appropriates $250.0 thousand from the general fund to the University of New Mexico for expenditure in FY05 for the neonatal intensive care unit to conduct a study on the use of lactation consultants, to provide breast pumps to mothers, and to reduce infant mortality and Medicaid costs.

Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY05 shall revert to the general fund.

Significant Issues

Experts believe there are significant immediate and long-term health benefits for infants who are breastfed.  Educating mothers about these benefits may increase the number choosing to nurse, or to otherwise provide breast milk.
