SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 493 appropriates $1.75 million from the general fund to the Indian Affairs Department to provide funding for a housing assistance program for Navajo veterans.

Significant Issues

The Department of Indian Affairs reports:

Housing is an important issue among Veterans.  Native Americans are eight times more likely to live in substandard housing conditions than other Americans according to a report by Harvard University.  The needs of Navajo veterans like other veterans are often not prioritized leaving them to live without those needs being met.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $1.75 million contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of Fiscal Year 2005 shall revert to the general fund..
