SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 477
appropriates $75.0 to PED to purchase awards to recognize student achievement
in extracurricular activities in public schools.
Significant Issues
According to PED, House Bill 477 does not
indicate how students will be identified and the type of awards that are to be
purchased. PED does not currently have staff for this purpose.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
House Bill 477
appropriates $75.0 from the general fund and is recurring.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
According to PED, the
department would have to establish criteria for the awards, determine award
recipients and distribute the awards.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
Currently, the New
Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) does provide awards for student
achievement in extracurricular activities including medals and trophies for
state events such as athletic competitions, band competition, academic
decathlon, speech and debate and other events. The revenue source for these
awards is the dues paid for membership in the NMAA and the attendance receipts
from state events.
