Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial
9 would require the DOH and PED to create a task force to study the appropriate
use and staffing of nurses in the state’s public schools.
Significant Issues
According to the PED and DOH:
The 2002-2003 Health Services Report indicates
that the current statewide FTE for public school nurses is 363.1.
The National Association of School Nurses and
Healthy People 2010 objectives, supports the national standard on school
nurse/student ratio is one school nurse per 750 students.
According to the 2002-2003 Health Services
Report, the current statewide ratio of school nurse to students in one school
nurse per 888.56 students.

force be comprised of representatives of the DOH, PED, school districts, the
school nurse association, school administrators, education-health assistant
organizations, the

This legislation would
require PED and DOH to create and serve on a task force examining appropriate
