SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 56 requests that the Metropolitan Criminal Justice Coordinating Council study the warrant process in Bernalillo County and report its findings to the Legislative Corrections Oversight and Justice Committee.

Significant Issues

The Metropolitan Criminal Justice Coordinating Council examines criminal justice statutes that impact the efficient and equitable administration of justice in Bernalillo County, and uses its resources to study and make recommendations to improve the criminal justice system, including the warrant process, in Bernalillo County.  Substantial resources are expended each year to process and serve warrants.

This memorial asks the Metropolitan Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to evaluate the warrants process in Bernalillo County, including the potential to change some warrants from criminal to civil law, data collection to determine if public safety and criminal justice resources would be impacted by changes in the warrant process, and an examination of statistically similar jurisdictions.
