SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 193 appropriates $50 thousand
from the general fund to the Department of Health (DOH) for expenditure in
fiscal year 2005 to hire a native Navajo speaking clinical social worker at the
Las Vegas Medical Center (LVMC).
Significant Issues
Best
practices require that clients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) be provided
access to communication services and program supports. Currently Navajo interpretation for patients
at LVMC is provided by a contracted interpreter. DOH reports there have been no known difficulties
reported by either the Patient Advocate or the Protection and Advocacy

The appropriation of $50.0 contained in this
bill is a recurring expense to the General Fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered
balance remaining at the end of FY 05 shall revert to the General Fund.

The
amount of this appropriation may not be sufficient to cover salary and benefits
for a full-time employee for a fiscal year.
