MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THAT THE GOVERNOR
PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF APRIL 19 TO APRIL 25, 2004 "TELEVISION TURN OFF
WEEK" IN NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS,
the Santa Fe public school district and various community organizations are
committed to the health and well-being of New Mexico's citizens; and
WHEREAS,
individuals have the right and the responsibility to determine the role
television plays in their lives and should balance television-watching with
other activities that encourage positive family and community interaction; and
WHEREAS,
many individuals and organizations in Santa Fe and in other New Mexico
communities, including educators, clergy, business professionals, health care
providers, environmentalists and artists, recognize that television contributes
to social and health problems within society; and
WHEREAS,
reduced television-watching leads to healthier living through decreases in
violence, substance abuse, unrealistic sexual attitudes and obesity and through
improved literacy; and
WHEREAS,
the week of April 19 to April 25, 2004 is designated as national
"Television Turn Off Week"; and
WHEREAS,
participants in "Television Turn Off Week" may engage in a broad
range of television-free activities that foster greater social, physical,
academic and creative development, resulting in an improved quality of life for
individuals and communities;
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW
MEXICO that the governor proclaim the week of April 19 to April 25, 2004
"Television Turn Off Week" in New Mexico; and
BE IT
FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor.
