AN ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION; CREATING THE NEW MEXICO GOVERNMENT EDUCATION FUND; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. A new section of Chapter 22 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:

     "[NEW MATERIAL] NEW MEXICO GOVERNMENT EDUCATION FUND.--

          A. The "New Mexico government education fund" is created in the state treasury.

          B. The fund shall consist of appropriations by the legislature, gifts, grants and donations.

          C. The fund shall be administered by the public education department. Money in the fund is appropriated to the public education department to contract for annual, week-long, high school civics courses focusing on New Mexico state government for boys and girls to be held at varying post-secondary educational institutions in New Mexico.

          D. Disbursements from the fund shall be made by warrant of the department of finance and administration pursuant to vouchers signed by the secretary of public education.

          E. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining in the fund at the end of a fiscal year shall not revert but shall remain to the credit of the New Mexico government education fund."

     Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the New Mexico government education fund for expenditure in fiscal year 2005 to contract for annual, week-long, high school civics courses focusing on New Mexico state government for boys and girls to be held at varying post-secondary educational institutions in New Mexico. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of a fiscal year shall not revert to the general fund.
