AN ACT
RELATING TO PUBLIC SAFETY; PERMITTING THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY TO PROVIDE EDUCATION INCENTIVE PAY FOR COMMISSIONED OFFICERS OF THE NEW MEXICO STATE POLICE, MOTOR TRANSPORTATION AND SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY WHO HAVE EARNED BACHELOR'S OR MASTER'S DEGREES; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY--INCENTIVE PAY FOR OFFICERS WITH CERTAIN DEGREES.--The department of public safety may provide as education incentive pay the following additional cumulative increments to the salary of a commissioned officer employed by the New Mexico state police division, the motor transportation division or the special investigations division of the department of public safety:
A. an additional one hundred dollars ($100) per month for a commissioned officer who has earned a bachelor's degree; and
B. an additional one hundred twenty-five dollars ($125) per month for a commissioned officer who has earned a master's degree.
Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Twenty-four thousand dollars ($24,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the department of public safety for expenditure in fiscal year 2005 to defray additional costs to provide education incentive pay to commissioned officers who have earned bachelor's or master's degrees. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2005 shall revert to the general fund.
