RECOGNIZING THE NATIONAL YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM FOR ITS SPORTS INSTRUCTION AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES.
WHEREAS, the national youth sports program provides structured sports instruction and enhances personal and social skill development for youth, ages ten to sixteen, from low-income families; and
WHEREAS, in addition to instruction in sports, young people receive information about alcohol and drug prevention, nutrition and personal health, career opportunities and job responsibilities and higher education opportunities; and
WHEREAS, the national youth sports program has demonstrated its ability to provide high quality services through partnerships with the federal government, institutions of higher education, the national collegiate athletic association and local communities; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico has a documented need for additional services for economically disadvantaged youth; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico has over seven institutions of higher education that have the potential to serve significant numbers of economically disadvantaged youth through programs like the national youth sports program; and
WHEREAS, the Honorable Pete Domenici, United States senator, has supported the efforts of the national youth sports program;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the national youth sports program be recognized for its youth development services; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Honorable Pete Domenici be encouraged to continue his support of federal funding for the national youth sports program; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Senator Pete Domenici.
