A MEMORIAL

HONORING THE LIFE OF FORMER STATE SENATOR GLORIA HOWES.



WHEREAS, Gloria Howes dedicated her life to public service, as an educator, county manager, county commissioner, state senator and civic champion; and

WHEREAS, schoolchildren from Keams Canyon, Arizona, to Gallup, New Mexico, were the beneficiaries of Gloria Howes' dual love for children and education; and

WHEREAS, as a state senator from 1989 through 2000, Gloria Howes worked tirelessly to improve education and broaden its accessibility, to bring services to the residents of the Navajo Nation and to improve the quality of civic discourse; and

WHEREAS, Gloria Howes became a leader in the legislature, serving as chair of the senate rules committee, vice chair of the senate education committee, co-chair of the DWI oversight task force and member and advisory member of numerous other committees, including the legislative education study committee and the New Mexico legislative council; and

WHEREAS, Gloria Howes earned the respect, love and admiration of her colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Gloria Howes died tragically in December 2002 at the age of 72 after falling at her home;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Gloria Howes be remembered for her hard work, contagious laugh and tremendous contributions to the well-being of children and adults throughout New Mexico; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the family of Gloria Howes with the deepest condolences of the senate.
