EXPRESSING THE CONDOLENCE OF THE SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF FIRE CHIEF STEVEN LOUIS JONES.
WHEREAS, Fire Chief Steven Louis Jones of Roswell, New Mexico, died on March 26, 2002 at forty-eight years of age; and
WHEREAS, Chief Jones was mortally wounded on March 16, 2002 when he was shot at the scene of a house fire; and
WHEREAS, Steven Jones grew up on a ranch outside of Roswell and joined the fire department in 1982, rising through the ranks to the office of fire chief in April 2001; and
WHEREAS, a city councilor described Chief Jones as "extremely intelligent, a great leader who fought hard for the fire department" and a fellow firefighter remembered him as the "big guy who cared so much"; and
WHEREAS, Chief Jones is survived by his wife Carol, a firefighter with the Fort Worth Fire Department, and by his sons, Marty and Cody;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that condolences be extended to the family and friends of Roswell Fire Chief Steven Louis Jones, a loving and devoted New Mexican who gave his life in the line of duty.
