A JOINT MEMORIAL

DESIGNATING JANUARY 29, 2003 AS "SCIENCE BENEFITING NEW MEXICO AND THE NATION FROM NATIONAL LABORATORIES DAY".

WHEREAS, New Mexico has been at the forefront of scientific endeavors for over fifty years and has achieved recognition in having within its borders the finest multiprogram scientific research laboratories in the world; and

WHEREAS, Los Alamos national laboratory and Sandia national laboratories have each made an enormous contribution to the safety and security of the United States in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorism attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, the laboratories are developing new technologies and improving current technologies to meet the challenges of tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, the laboratories continue to partner with various entities within our state to assist in technology transfer to benefit New Mexico's economy;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it be requested to honor and commend Los Alamos national laboratory and Sandia national laboratories for their dedicated service to the scientific and technological communities of this state and the world in meeting the complex challenges of tomorrow; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature be requested to designate January 29, 2003 as "Science Benefiting New Mexico and the Nation from National Laboratories Day"; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the director of Los Alamos national laboratory, the director of Sandia national laboratories, the federal department of energy and the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation.
