REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT THE COMPLETION OF PASEO DEL NORTE.
WHEREAS, completion of the long-planned extension of paseo del norte on the west side of Albuquerque is necessary to alleviate traffic congestion and support economic development; and
WHEREAS, President William Jefferson Clinton signed legislation in 1998 allowing paseo del norte to bisect the petroglyph national monument; and
WHEREAS, plans to extend paseo del norte are aimed at minimizing harm to the petroglyphs and maintaining access to the petroglyph national monument for all who currently use it; and
WHEREAS, completion of the extension of paseo del norte has been frustrated by numerous political, legislative, regulatory and funding delays; and
WHEREAS, sufficient funding is available for a two-lane extension of paseo del norte, but further funding and right of way must be secured to properly complete the extension;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico congressional delegation be requested to actively support the acquisition of funds and right of way to complete the extension of paseo del norte; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the state's congressional delegation, the mayor of Albuquerque and the members of the Albuquerque city council.
