SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 87 requests the Office of Cultural Affairs and the Economic Development Department to support the Amateur World Hall of Fame Museum, Inc. and the Amateur International Sports Educational Federation, Inc. in their efforts to recognize amateur athletes and induct honorees; promote self-discipline, self-confidence, honor and integrity; and foster exemplary lifestyles.

     Significant Issues

The Amateur Athletic World Hall of Fame Museum, Inc. was created to induct, recognize, reward, educate and enhance the future of young people through sports and career programs.

This Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame Museum, the first and only such museum devoted to this subject area, is incorporated in Albuquerque and has received support from the city its Mayor Martin Chavez.  The first Amateur Athletic World Hall of Fame Awards Banquet is scheduled for 2004.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

As noted by the Office of Cultural Affairs, language in the memorial requests that the Office of Cultural Affairs “support” these organizations and efforts.  Definition and scope of “support” is not stated.  While the Office of Cultural Affairs does not have funds available to support such a museum financially, the agency does have museum professionals who can be consulted on museum development, operation and management issues.
