SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

SJM 58 requests the New Mexico Corrections Department to examine the need, feasibility and other issues regarding the possible expansion of the privately owned and operated correctional facility in Guadalupe County by fifty-two cells to house an additional 104 inmates.  SJM 58 further requests the Corrections Department report its findings and any recommendations to the second session of the forty-sixth legislature.

    Significant Issues

The New Mexico Corrections Department notes that the memorial, if adopted, would impose a slight administrative burden on correctional staff to conduct the needs assessment and feasibility study in order to conduct and finalize its findings in anticipation of presenting a report thereon to the second session of this legislature.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

There is no appropriation of funds attached to SJM58.
