State Department of Education (SDE)
SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 23 requests the State Board of Education (SBE) to study the benefits of smaller schools and methods to reduce school size and to report the findings of that study to the Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) by November 1,2003.
Significant
Issues
The bill sites research on the advantages of small schools, in the areas of safety, attendance rates, lower dropout rates and better participation rates.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The SDE indicates that
the department would be able to fulfill the requirements of the legislation.
According to SDE, current staff would be able to
accomplish the request.
