SUMMARY

 

     Synopsis of Bill

 

Senate Bill 642 appropriates $3,000.0 to the SDE to support high schools implementing research-based reform that focuses on smaller learning communities, promotes quality programs in academic, career and technical education and includes an evaluation component  and technical support.

 

     Significant Issues

 

According to SDE, this bill supports the State Board of Education strategic issue of academic achievement and directly addresses the following:

 

·        Skills and competencies identified by the Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills.

·        Locally developed goals connected with districts’ Educational Plan for Student Success.

·        High school reform in which career pathways are incorporated for the smooth transition from secondary to postsecondary education or the workforce.

 

The bill would enhance the ability of the SDE to provide technical assistance in all related areas for implementation of high school reform.

 

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

 

Senate Bill 642 appropriates $3,000.0 from the general fund and would be recurring.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

 

According to SDE, the bill would continue the efforts of the SBE and SDE to achieve high school reform. Existing SDE staff would administer the funds.
