SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 346 appropriates $15.0 from the general fund to the State Department of Education (SDE) to pay the expenses of the Santa Fe High School volleyball team.

     Significant Issues

This bill supports the State Board of Education’s (SBE) Physical Education Content Standards with benchmarks adopted in 1997. It also addresses two significant societal and educational issues by providing:

·        extra curricular activities for teenagers,

·        physical activities for youngsters in an effort to ward off obesity, and

·        opportunities for students to develop athletic skills.1.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $15.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund.  Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2004 shall revert to the general fund.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

1.                  Is the district able to fund the activities for other sports, such soccer, baseball tennis, etc.?

2.                  Would funding this request lead to the legislature having to provide some funding for all athletic teams as is done for the state’s universities?
