SUMMARY

     Synopsis of SCORC Amendment

The Senate Corporations and Transportation Committee amends Senate Bill 220 by restricting the amount of time allowed for responsible parenting activities.  The amendment allows no more than two hours per month, rather than no fewer than 24 hours per year.  Additionally, the amendment includes children who are home schooled.

     Synopsis of Original Bill

Senate Bill 220 requires employers to allow employees leave without pay to attend parenting activities.  This time is to be a minimum of 24 hours per year, taken in one hour or greater increments, to attend events such as school activities and routine medical visits.

     Significant Issues

Senate Bill 220 requires the employee to give the employer verbal or written notice of the event at least five working days prior to the date of leave, except in the case of an emergency, when the employee may request leave as soon as he/she learns of the situation.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The employer would have to compensate for the absence of the employee during leave without pay for responsible parenting activities.
