SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
Senate Bill 130
appropriates $32.0 from the general fund to the SDE to provide for a youth leadership
opportunity program for high school juniors in
Significant
Issues
According to the SDE, students who have access
to leadership development experiences early in their academic careers
frequently make better-informed decisions about postsecondary opportunities,
and ultimately careers. The foundations
of these decisions are shaped early in an adolescent’s life and are often
influenced by role models and peers. Leadership
opportunities can offer students to explore new and different challenges as
well as to develop interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with other
students.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of
$32.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any
unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2004
shall revert to the general fund.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
1.
How will this program be run?
2.
Will SDE contract with APS or some other
entity?
3.
What kinds of opportunities will be
provided?
4.
Will the program be open to all high
school juniors in Albuquerque or just public school students?
