SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
Senate Bill 60 amends
Section 35-1-10 NMSA 1978 to increase the number of magistrate judges in the
Dona Ana magistrate court district from five to six. The bill also appropriates $381.8 to the
Administrative Office of the Courts for salaries and benefits, furniture,
supplies and equipment for the additional magistrate judge and for six
additional court employees. Other appropriations
outlined in SB60 totaling $163.9 provide for additional resources for the
district attorneys and public defenders in the Dona Ana magistrate court
district.

Issues
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $545.8
contained in this bill is a recurring*
expense to the general fund. Any
unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2004 shall
revert to the general fund.
*Part of the appropriations to the Dona
Ana magistrate court, district attorney and public defender is specifically for
furniture and equipment. These are
considered capital items (defined by DFA as purchases over $1,500) and are a
one-time expense. Therefore, a
portion of this appropriation must be designated as non-recurring.
