SUMMARY
Synopsis of HEC Amendment
The Senate
Education Committee amended House Bill 772 on page 2, line 25. The amendment is
technical in nature and does not change the original intent of the bill.
Synopsis
of Original Bill
House Bill 772 requires schools to schedule an
in-service day or be closed on election days.
Significant
Issues
School districts must be in compliance with the length of school day and year requirements as defined in Section 22-2-8-1 NMSA 1978. All public school calendars must reflect minimum hourly statutory requirements.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
House Bill 772 does
not contain an appropriation.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
According to SDE, districts and schools would need to build
calendars to accommodate election days.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE
ISSUES
Districts may
designate a prescribed number of in-service days as defined in the state’s
Standards of Excellence. These in-service days must be built into the school
calendar.
Required school
closings would ensure school safety for children and staff that utilize
buildings during regular school days.
