SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
House Bill 711
amends NMSA 1978, § 1-12-53 to eliminate the option of a person voting on an
emergency paper ballot for voting for a write-in candidate or any candidate
whose name is not printed on the ballot. Additionally, the bill repeals §
1-8-36.1 that permits write-in candidates in primary elections; repeals §
1-12-19.1 that permits write-in candidates in general elections; and repeals §
1-12-47 that permits write-in candidates on emergency paper ballots.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
The Secretary of State
anticipates a moderate positive impact on ballot reviews, layout, proofreading,
and canvassing of elections.
