SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 358 appropriates $10.0 to SDE to purchase the video “A New Mexico Story: The Bataan Death March to the Atomic Bomb” for every middle/junior and high school library, public library and armory in New Mexico.

     Significant Issues

This video encompasses a period of time during which New Mexico citizens participated in significant global events and demonstrates the manner in which New Mexico citizens affected the outcome of global crises.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

House Bill 358 appropriates $10.0 from the general fund and is non-recurring.

Public schools including charter schools and adult basic education centers currently receive discretionary instructional material funding that may be used to support the acquisition of materials relevant to these historical events.

OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES

SDE indicates that the New Mexico Social Studies Content Standards, Benchmarks and Performance Standards address this time frame, and New Mexico public schools are required to develop curriculum to ensure that students have the opportunities to learn about these events and their signficance.
