SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 208 amends Section 1-15-4, and Section 1-15-6 NMSA 1978 of the Election Code to provide for proportional selection of presidential electors replacing the current system which selects the presidential electors from the party whose nominees for president and vice president receive the highest number of votes at the general election.

     Significant Issues

This bill replaces the “winner take all system” with a system that is proportional to the portion of the popular vote received by a party’s candidate.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

This bill contains no appropriation.
