SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 154 appropriates $40,000 from the General Fund to the Office of Indian Affairs for the purpose of funding the Walatowa visitors’ center.

     Significant Issues

The Office of Cultural Affairs reports that the Walatowa Visitors Center is a well-attended facility located at Jemez Pueblo.  The Center provides diverse services to visitors in the areas of cultural tourism, hospitality, meetings and conferences, and basic tourist information.  Specifically, the Walatowa Center highlights the cultural traditions and history of Jemez Pueblo while providing a gallery space where arts and crafts made by members of Jemez Pueblo are exhibited and sold.  The Center provides hundreds of yearly visitors a glimpse of Jemez Pueblo’s cultural life at an offsite location, thus avoiding the interruption of daily and sacred lives.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $40.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the General Fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of Fiscal Year 2004 shall revert to the General Fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

No administrative implications are apparent on the Office of Indian Affairs.  This is apparently just a pass through appropriation with the agency not providing oversight or continuing direct involvement.
