SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

Senate Memorial 48 requests the New Mexico congressional delegation to introduce and pursue legislation to remove the Cabezon, Chamisa, Ignacio Chavez, Empedrado and La Lena wilderness study areas from said designation and return them to Multiple-use Sustained-yield Act of 1960.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

Enactment of SM 48 would not have a fiscal impact on a state agency. If the lands in question were returned to multiple-use, sustained-yield management, there could be economic value generated from the use of natural resources.

Senate Bill 590 would require the Commissioner of Public Lands to pursue a lawsuit against the U.S. Government to return federal lands to the state. The lands in question would be included under such a lawsuit.
