SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
House Bill 487
appropriates $100.0 from the general fund to the State Agency on Aging for respite
care services for families of persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
Significant
Issues
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of
$100.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance
remaining at the end of fiscal year 2004 shall revert to the general fund.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
According to the State
Agency on Aging, without this legislation there will be an increase in the numbers of
families waiting for respite, an increase in caregiver stress and an increase
in institutionalization of adults with Alzheimer’s who would prefer to be in
their own homes and cared for by their families.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
1. What other programs exist in
the State Aging on Agency or Health or Human Services Department for families of
victims of Alzheimer’s disease? Do any
federal programs provide funding for the respite services noted in this
bill?
