RELATING TO POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION; ESTABLISHING ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT ATHLETES THAT ARE NO HIGHER THAN THOSE OF CERTAIN OTHER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES; ENACTING A SECTION OF THE NMSA 1978.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of Chapter 21, Article 1 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:

"[NEW MATERIAL] ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT ATHLETES.--The boards of regents of the university of New Mexico, New Mexico state university, New Mexico highlands university, western New Mexico university, eastern New Mexico university, New Mexico military institute, New Mexico institute of mining and technology and northern New Mexico state school and the governing board of New Mexico junior college shall not fix the standard of requirements for admission or ongoing academic eligibility for student athletes to their respective institutions at a level greater than those of student athletes in a college or university:

A. in an athletic conference in which the respective state educational institution competes; or

B. in a national athletic association in which the state educational institution participates if it is not a member of an athletic conference."
