RELATING TO EDUCATION; REQUIRING A SALARY DIFFERENTIAL FOR TEACHERS WHO ARE CERTIFIED BY THE NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS AND WHO TEACH IN SCHOOLS WITH NINETY PERCENT OF STUDENTS RECEIVING FREE OR REDUCED-FEE LUNCHES; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. PUBLIC SCHOOLS--TEACHER SALARIES--DIFFERENTIAL.--A salary differential of four thousand dollars ($4,000) shall be awarded to a teacher who:
A. is certified by the national board for professional teaching standards; and
B. teaches in a New Mexico public school in which at least ninety percent of the students attending the school receive a free or reduced-fee lunch.
Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Four hundred twenty-eight thousand dollars ($428,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2004 and subsequent fiscal years for the purpose of carrying out the provisions of this act. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of a fiscal year shall revert to the general fund.
