AN ACT

RELATING TO CRIMINAL LAW; REQUIRING A FIRST-TIME OFFENDER WHO VIOLATES AN OFFENSE SET FORTH IN THE CRIMES AGAINST HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS ACT TO UNDERGO PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING; ENACTING A SECTION OF THE CRIMES AGAINST HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS ACT.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of the Crimes Against Household Members Act is enacted to read:

"[NEW MATERIAL] COUNSELING.--In addition to any other punishments provided in the Crimes Against Household Members Act, the court shall order a person convicted for the first time for violation of a criminal offense pursuant to the Crimes Against Household Members Act to participate in and complete a program of professional counseling at his own expense."

Section 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2003.
