A
MEMORIAL
REQUESTING GOVERNMENT AGENCIES,
ELECTED OFFICIALS AND THE PUBLIC TO MEET AND COOPERATE TO COMPLETE THE
TAJIQUE-TO-TORREON LOOP ROAD.
WHEREAS, about ten thousand
campers use the fourth of July campground and another six thousand use the
nearby Inlow youth camp in Torrance county; and
WHEREAS, the road leading from
the community of Tajique to the fourth of July campground is a gravel and dirt
road, with only half of it being suitable for passenger vehicles; and
WHEREAS, there exists in New
Mexico's forest lands a constant fire danger, which threatens the lives and
personal property of many who use the forests; and
WHEREAS, upgrading the road
from Tajique to the fourth of July campground to a two-lane graveled road,
suitable throughout its length for passenger vehicles, and continuing the road
as a single-lane graveled road from the campground to Torreon would improve
access to and emergency egress from the area; and
WHEREAS, numerous governmental
entities, elected officials and members of the public have expressed support
for upgrading the existing road and completing a Tajique-to-Torreon loop;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Torrance
county commissioners, United States Senators Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman,
United States Representative Heather Wilson, representatives of the Cibola
national forest, appropriate state legislators and representatives of
interested businesses, groups and members of the public be invited to meet to
cooperate on finding methods to upgrade the road from Tajique to the fourth of
July campground and to complete the road to Torreon to result in a
Tajique-to-Torreon loop; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that
copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governmental agencies, elected
officials and individuals who have expressed an interest in this project.
