A JOINT MEMORIAL

EXPRESSING THE SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF JOHN D. ROGERS.

WHEREAS, John D. Rogers passed away on Monday, June 24, 2002, at the age of eighty; and

WHEREAS, he first moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, in 1944 and worked as a scientist during the Manhattan project and spent most of his career as a scientist at the laboratory; and

WHEREAS, he served in the New Mexico senate from 1970 to 1980, serving as the vice chair of the senate education committee from 1973 to 1974, and serving as the vice chair of the senate finance committee from 1975 to 1980; and

WHEREAS, he worked on environmental issues; simplifying New Mexico's personal income tax return; bringing a branch of the university of New Mexico to Los Alamos; helping to build the ski hill and utility and highway infrastructure necessary for development; helping to found the Los Alamos national bank; playing a major role in acquiring part of the San Juan generating station; and retrofitting Abiquiu and El Vado dams; and

WHEREAS, he was known as an unassuming man who was always straightforward and honest, holding himself and others to a high standard; and

WHEREAS, he worked as a community servant with a sense of political responsibility, while contributing to society and serving as a role model as one of the state's leading scientists; and

WHEREAS, he remained committed to excellence in his personal, professional and public life; and

WHEREAS, he remained dedicated to his wife, Patt;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the most sincere condolences be extended to the family and friends of John D. Rogers; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Patt Rogers.
