A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE LEGISLATURE TO DECLARE FEBRUARY 1 "LITERACY DAY AT THE LEGISLATURE".



WHEREAS, the New Mexico coalition for literacy has existed for fifteen years; and

WHEREAS, during that time approximately eighteen thousand volunteer tutors have received training from the New Mexico coalition for literacy and those tutors have provided approximately one million two hundred thousand hours of instruction; and

WHEREAS, approximately forty-five thousand adult students have been served by volunteer literacy programs statewide; and

WHEREAS, a literate population in New Mexico means that New Mexicans will be able to obtain better jobs, continue toward higher education, become more involved in their children's education, register to vote, become better consumers, become more active in their communities and gain self-confidence and self-esteem;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF NEW MEXICO that February 1 be declared "Literacy Day at the Legislature"; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico coalition for literacy.
