A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT THE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION WIDEN UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 666 TO FOUR LANES.



WHEREAS, United States highway 666 is popularly referred to as "death road" because of the number of fatal accidents, including head-on collisions, that occur on it each year because it is, partly, only two lanes; and

WHEREAS, numerous New Mexico residents must travel on highway 666 to go from Gallup to Shiprock, New Mexico, or from Gallup to the Colorado state line; and

WHEREAS, many tourists travel on highway 666 to reach Shiprock, New Mexico; and

WHEREAS, highway 666 is part of several school bus routes and participants in head start programs must travel on highway 666;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway commission be requested to designate the widening of all of United States highway 666 to four lanes a top priority; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chairman of the state highway commission.
