A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT THE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION AUTHORIZE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOGBACK BRIDGE TO SERVICE THE NAVAJO COMMUNITIES NEAR THE SAN JUAN CHAPTER.



WHEREAS, the condition of roads servicing the San Juan chapter area is dangerous; and

WHEREAS, residents of the San Juan chapter area must travel on these roads to use police and hospital services located in Shiprock and Farmington; and

WHEREAS, ambulances from Shiprock must travel on these roads to the San Juan chapter area; and

WHEREAS, most students who are residents of the San Juan chapter area must travel on these roads to reach their schools located in Kirtland, which is across the San Juan river; and

WHEREAS, most residents of the San Juan chapter area must travel on these roads to reach their places of employment in Farmington; and

WHEREAS, the construction of the Hogback bridge would substantially increase the safety of San Juan chapter area residents, allowing them to reach the hospital and police and for ambulances to reach them in approximately half the current driving time; and

WHEREAS, the construction of the Hogback bridge would substantially increase the safety of San Juan chapter area residents because it would be paved up to Navajo route 36;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway commission be requested to designate the construction of the Hogback bridge a top priority; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the chairman of the state highway commission.
