SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
Senate
Joint Memorial 49 requests that the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
International be recognized for its work in funding diabetes research and that
January 29, 2002 be recognized as “Diabetes Awareness Day” at the legislature.
Significant
Issues
DOH
supplied the following information from the Department of Health Diabetes
Prevention and Control Program:
Diabetes
is the seventh leading cause of death in New Mexico. There are an estimated 120,563 people over age 18 in New Mexico
with diabetes. Approximately 17% of all
New Mexicans age 40
and over have diabetes with 90 – 95% having Type 2 Diabetes. Hispanics and American Indians are 2 – 3
times more likely to develop diabetes than non-Hispanic Whites. School age children are at high risk for
developing Type 2 Diabetes; especially due to lack of physical exercise and unhealthy
eating habits. In the year 2000 in New Mexico 500 people died from diabetes,
684 lost limbs, 582 lost their sight, 337 began renal dialysis
and
over 17,000 people were hospitalized with diseases related to diabetes. The cost to New Mexico in dollars and in
lost quality of life is enormous.
Type
1 Diabetes develops at any age, but most cases are diagnosed before the age of
30 years. It is characterized by
autoimmune destruction of insulin producing cells.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
“Diabetes Awareness Day at the Roundhouse” has been sponsored each year since 1994 by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) with collaboration and support from the New Mexico Diabetes Advisory Council and the DOH Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.
