State Department of Education (SDE)
SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 17 requests the SDE work
with the Department of Health and other interested organizations to develop
strategies to enable teachers to implement quality physical education curricula
and teaching techniques that will encourage students at all grade levels to
learn and implement skills for lifelong participation in physical activity.
Significant
Issues
The SDE reports that the State Board of Education (SBE) adopted content standards with benchmarks for physical education K-12, and that physical education is a graduation requirement for New Mexico public schools.
According to SDE, this memorial supports the
department's performance measures of:
Academic
Achievement: Percent of districts
“satisfied” with the department’s technical assistance services for improved
student achievement, and
Quality Teachers, Principals, Administrators, and Education Support Personnel: Percent of districts that implement State Board of Education policies and competencies for the education profession.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
Implementing this bill would have minimal
administrative impact on SDE.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
What kinds of
physical education programs are currently being implemented in New Mexico’s elementary
schools? Middle Schools? High schools?
