SUMMARY
Synopsis
of Bill
Senate Bill 125 directs the SDE to design and
implement a program to recruit, mentor and prepare public school students and
public university students to follow a career in teaching.
Significant
Issues
The program should include summer instruction, classroom experience and mentoring by outstanding teachers, a plan for students in grades 6-16 and an evaluation component.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Senate Bill 125
appropriates $300.0 from the general fund and is recurring.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
The SDE
would contract for services to develop the program. The SDE states that the program would
support the department’s performance measures assuring a high percentage of
teachers licensed/endorsed in the subject they teach.
