SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

House Memorial 1 requests the United States Congress appropriate enough funds to complete construction of the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project.  This program is partially the outcome of allowing water from the San Juan River to be delivered to Albuquerque.  The Navajo Nation Irrigation Project (NNIP) ultimately is to put 110,000 acres under cultivation.  Started in the 1960’s, the NIIP did not begin operations until 1973.  The project has slowly expanded the number of irrigated acres for cultivation.  The Memorial reports that currently only 70,000 of the 110,000 are irrigated after more than 20 years of delay.  The memorial notes the importance of agricultural expansion to the Navajo Nation and encourages co-operation in encouraging completion of the project.

Copies of the memorial are to be transmitted to the New Mexico congressional delegation, the President of the United States, the Navajo agricultural products industry board of directors, and the Navajo Nation President and the Navajo Nation Council.
