SUMMARY

     Synopsis of HGUAC Amendment

The House Government and Urban Affairs Committee amendment adds the Office of Cultural Affairs with the other departments to cooperate with the Town of Edgewood and other organizations named in the memorial.  Additionally, the amendment replaces the references to the “Association for Community of Edgewood” with the “Advancement Corporation of Edgewood.”  Finally, the amendment adds a paragraph that explains the fact that the Works Progress Administration School House has been named to New Mexico’s 2002 Most Endangered Place list by New Mexico’s Heritage Preservation Alliance.

     Synopsis of Original Bill

House Joint Memorial 48 requests the Economic Development Department, Tourism Department and the State Highway and Transportation Department to work with the Town of Edgewood, Project Association for Community of Edgewood and the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce to preserve, revitalize and promote cultural and historic sites, tourism and economic development in the Edgewood region.

     Significant Issues

All agencies indicate that there is currently coordination with the Town of Edgewood on various activities.  The Tourism Department has had significant influence in the promotion of Route 66 and the municipalities along the historic route.  In addition, the town of Edgewood received $10.1 in cooperative advertising matching funds from the Tourism Department.  In addition, the town of Edgewood has submitted a Scenic Byways grant application to the State Highway and Transportation Department that requests $210.0 to assist in the renovation of a 1930’s-era Works Progress Administration project school house at the junction of historic Route 66 and NM 344.

This memorial will allow for the formal coordination of state agencies and local government and organizations.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
