SUMMARY
House Bill 414
appropriates $50.0 from the general fund to the Local Government Division of
the Department of Finance and Administration to contract with the city of Santa
Fe for a survey on developing the woodworking and furniture industry in New
Mexico.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of
$50.0 contained in this bill is a non-recurring expense to the general fund.
Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2003
shall revert to the general fund.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
None reported.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
According to the
Department of Tourism, “woodworking and furniture making could be developed
into a cottage industry that could be identified with New Mexico. North Carolina is an example where its small
towns have become renowned for furniture and woodworking. That recognition has become a component of
their tourism industry.”
According to the
Office of Cultural Affairs, “HB 414 may be duplicative of work currently
offered through TRADE, a nonprofit organization that works with and promotes
the woodworking and furniture industry in northern New Mexico.”
